Other reviews said boots run small. I ordered one size larger than I wear and had to return them for my actual size. There is some pinching in the heal that is uncomfortable at first but breaks in after a few wears.

    • Third review, three years of use, pull the eyelets
      Reviewer: Robert Nielsen

      4/24/2016

I think these boots are awesome! I have three years of everyday use for 7 months of the year on the first set. My second set is still pretty new, not so beat up, not snow sealed 10 times. That first set will not give it up! I used them today on an 8 mile trail run in the north cascades, with no socks! I did go a full size larger, from 13 to 14 initially, and I love the room for my feet to work it out, that's the reason for that big toe box. These are moccasins, and if you want to get back into running after nerve damage from a back injury, read Born to Run, get up, get out of the door. I was disabled 10 years ago. The barefoot style of running got me back. I'm 59. Hey! Best Mimi Mil hack ever! : pull out the eyelets and those stupid barrel eyelets up top. That's the first thing I did to my new pair, and I love them that way. The suede is plenty strong for the laces since you don't need to crank them up tight. And for you active duty guys, they will still look great and meet standards with those eyelets gone. The idea is for your foot to get strong, not be supported by the boot, and that will happen. All you want is that kevlar enhanced sole to smooth out the sharp stuff, and the 8" height to keep out the trail debris. Now that I don't have the eyelets, I can use them with my skyke roller skis too, without the barrel eyelets cutting into my shin. Takes about 15 minutes with good needle nose pliers to get the eyelets out without doing any damage to the boot. Then, if you snow seal, or your laces fray, you can actually re lace up the boot. Yeah, it's a pain to get them on and off due to needing to unlace so much , but it's easier without the eyelets. I put my boots on in the morning, ride my bike to work, do construction and maintenance and whatever all day, then go for a run, all with the same foot gear. I've logged many miles on the PCT running from Stehenkin to highway 20. These minimalist boots take some time to get used to. This year, after a great winter, I put my mini mils on for the first time in March, and I did notice some calf pain while my body got used to them again. If your boots are very supportive ( AT ski Boots ) your muscles have less to do, it stands to reason. Get these boots, start running very short distances, give yourself time to adjust, practice eliminating heel strikes, and have fun. Perfect with kilts. RLTW cheers, bob

Boots take a while to break in but once they do they are great you might have to play with the lacing to keep them from rubbing your ankle bone, just wish they were waterproof

      3/2/2016

Granted this may change as I just wore them for the first time today, and only for a funeral. But these boots are SOOOO uncomfortable! They polish nicely, but there's no support, the toe box is HUGE so your foot feels like it's in a clown shoe. Yet somehow the heal and ankle support in this boot are unwavering and WILL cause blisters. I didn't do much more than sit for a half an hour in these and I started to get blisters. Not worth it guys and gals. Oh but they are relatively light weight. So that's decent....

      12/29/2015

Love these boots. The first pair I ordered were way too small and not to size so definitely order a half or size bigger or you'll be in trouble. The new ones are great and a size bigger than I normally wear. There like you'd expect, as close to a barefoot feel and foot control you can get with a solid boot around your feet while bending to the surfaces your on. There still new so I still have to see how they hold up over time but being the same quality build from what I can see as my other Tactical Research boots that I've had for 3 years now my expectations are pretty good. I wear them for duty though my duty is a mix of surfaces I walk in. but they grip all of them well and let me glide along as needed. If you're doing a lot of hard surface walking and standing I think you'd be better off with a boot with more cushion and sole to it because these don't have it. That's what makes them minimalistic of course.

I recently purchased my second pair of Mini mils. My first pair lasted 2 seasons of moderate use, and during that time I was so keen on them that I sold another 4 pair through word of mouth. They have a lot of upsides- great flexibility and articulation of the foot- but are lacking in other areas. One of the biggest issues I've dealt with is the sharpness of the lace eyelets- these boots cut through laces at least twice a month. I'd also like to see a little better tread, although this is compromising point on minimalist boots. The new pair I just purchased is much stiffer than I remember and has taken a few weeks of discomfort to break in. This boot is also affordable, which is more than can be said for any other minimalist boot currently on the market.

I love the idea of these boot as I wear minimalist shoes outside of work. Everything about these boots is true they are SUPER light and flexible, but the insoles that come with the boots will not stay in place. My biggest issue is the insoles in both boots slipped back and my toes hang over the edge. I am trying "minimalist" insoles to see if they will stay put. Other than that they hold a good shine with kiwi, look and feel great and over all I am happy. fit true to size.

Great boot, have now had this pair for just over two years. These are worn 40hrs per week all year around for patrol. Rain and snow, my feet would not get wet unless submerged. Extremely comfortable. My only complaint is that the warranty is for one year, and just after that my soles started to separate. But needless to say they have still managed for an extra year.

      9/12/2015

I have had two pair of these boots in the last couple of years. They are great if you wear minimalist sole running shoes. All the shoes i wear are "barefoot" style or minimal drop. Wearing these full-time at work makes the chances of injury less likely when you are an otherwise minimalist shoe wearer. The transition doesn't set you up to have pains and aches when running and rucking. If you are not already accustom to the minimal drop, proper conversion and acclimation is very important. Your shins and calves will hurt if you are not prepared for the change. For the review that says "blisters"... well that's operator error and not the fault of the boot. I noticed I had to change sizes as well as break in the ankle/heel a little. Proper socks, size and tie is important. These run smaller than the Nike's and other Bellville boots that I have worn before. I found I wear a full size smaller in these than i did in the popular Nike boots. These boots look good and feel amazing. From the first time I put them on they felt broken in and like I was wearing a sock. It helped also to get rid of a long case of achilles tendonitis caused from the daily transition from boots to shoes. Since these reflected the drop my legs and feet were used to in my running and crossfit shoes, I was able to eliminate my post run pains. I hope to see the coyote version come out soon for wear with the new Army uniform.

      7/14/2015

My first pair is two years old, still driving on, with only slight separation starting between sole and upper in one spot. Almost constant use for 7-9 months of the last two years. Many trail running miles, daily work; many soakings and swims. . I buy one size larger than my usual. Hardly any wear to the sole visible!... which makes me wish it was a touch softer for better grip on sloped rock, but this boot is not for steep edging in the mountains with a load. Just a great all around work and running boot with built in gaitor to keep the trail debris out. I use sno seal on all of it for NW weather. (vents too). Love this boot.

These are the best boots I have ever owned. Just purchased my second pair because, well 2 is better than one. The only thing is I wore them training for the Bataan death March and wore them on a lot of blacktop. With the lack of cushion and the long rucks on hardtop you better have tough feet. Other than that, truly PERFECT.

This is my second pair of these minimalist boots. I really like them for their light weight and comfort. As others have noted there is a break in period while the heel cup forms to your foot, but thereafter I've been able to spend a whole day moving around on my feet in them comfortably. The toe box room is fantastic and very much like my favorite running shoes. I recommend that you size these boots as though they were running shoes, a full size or so bigger than most other footwear.

I have been looking for an inexpensive pair training boots for awhile and when I saw these I had to have them. Right out of the box they fit great, once you are in them. They are hard to get on and off but once you have them on you don't want to take them off. Hopefully after they are broken in they will feel even better and be easier to put on and take off. My only suggestion about this boot is that a rubber toe cap would help prolong the life of the leather toes. In construction or any active lifestyle the toes wear out fast! Great boot!

I have neuropathy in both of my feet, so to be able to get through an entire shift without any pain is incredible. This is my 2nd pair. The 1st pair I bought to wear around the house, etc. I can't wait to get these broken in like the 1st pair. Highly recommended.

Second pair for me. Excellent sole but the leather cuts/abrades very easily. Great utility boot but if you also need a polished uniform boot, the easily dinged leather make it difficult to get a smooth shine. (Solution- get two pair.) Yes- Order half size up, especially with any kind of thicker sock.

As members of the military we try to look neat at all times these boots tend to hold stains. when I wiped them they became very fuzzy and i had to buy another pair of boots sooner than i usally do. I run and walk using minimalist footwear as a matter of principle and lifestyle. These boots are everything I wanted in a boot. They're hard core and strong enough to break things and stomp around, but without to much pressure on the foot and achilles tendon ( as there is with the Vivobarefoot Gobi). They're waterproof, breathable and they come in wide wich i think is great. If you're into barefoottedness, you'll notice their effect on your gait. They're bulky, loud, and as result I wouldn't run with them as a first choice. However they're still wrote comfortable for running, I would suggest learning how to work them. They get softer, so that's aplus. The lacing is over and around the middle of the foot where the arch is, which is a sweet spot. You can tighten them securely and your feet won't fall asleep. The ankle and calf could use either padding or what I did which I relaced them so that body of my foot is tight and the ankle/ calf is looser.

With the new insert it feels like a tennis shoe. It's comfortable enough to walk many blocks on pavement at bike rally's, light and airy enough to keep me cool even while stopped at red lights on hot pavement. For me, it's perfect. Now I just need summertime to get here.

Have used the boots in rugged terrain and during search and rescue training. As a female, the sizing was a question mark as i considered purchasing the boot---but using the measurement chart and ruler gave me a "fits like a glove" result with my purchase. I love these boots!!! I where them all the time. I wanted a pair of lightweight, minimalistic boots, and these are just that!!! I loved wearing Merrell minimalistic running shoes, and wanted a boot that would feel at least close. When I got the boots they were a bit stiff, but after a week or so, they felt amazing. I can wear them all day, walking around, running, riding my unicycle, and my feet never get sore, ever. If you like minimalistic footwear, these boots are wonderful!!! Get a half size bigger.

First definitely get a half size larger, they look great, ankle support is okay if you get over the rubbing or in my case cutting into the ankle bone. I don't think they were meant to be worn for 14 hours a day in a concrete jungle. I love the minimalist feel the light weight just not enough foot protection for my line of work. Would I buy these again no would I like my money back or exchange for a different pair of boots yes but that's just me.

Bought for use as a motorcycle boot -- replacement for my 45-year old US Marine Corps issue combat boots. Wish I'd paid better attention to the size warnings. I ordered my actual size and they're barely big enough, but OK. (1/2 size up would have been better, and in fact one of the initially sent mis-sized ones was a better fit). Very lightweight, but (I hope) seem to provide the protection wanted. OK, but nothing special, comfort-wise after a few uses. A bit overpriced. Not sure I'd buy them again.

These boots greatly help prevent injury! Prior to these boots I bought a pair of BlackHawk Desert Ops, which came highly recommended to me. The Desert Ops were much more comfortable than GI, however they suffered from 2 big problems! 1) A big heel-to-toe differential. 2) Lack of flexibility in the foot. I could go on about these boots for hours! I will be writing a paper about the advantages of these boots in terms of physics/biomechanics, in comparison to the Desert Ops and GI boots. I'm only 10 months out from my last surgery, and for the past 5 I've absolutely had to wear a reinforced brace just to stand. HOWEVER! After going out on a limb, and getting these boots, I no longer have to wear the brace!! (It's actually a huge deal). Don't let the uber thin sole fool you, these boots are really supportive and amazingly comfortable. The only real issue is that the laces are a tad stretchy, so after walking around long enough they loosen up.

I was in the market for some new boots and had grown tired of the big, clunky boots that I'd had in the past. I saw these and, being a fan of minimalistic footwear, knew that they'd be perfect for me. After receiving them I noticed that they were lighter than any other boot I'd ever seen, but were much more stiff than I had expected. Yet, that was not too big of an issue, as it took less than a week to break them in. Although thin, the sole is actually quite strong, durable, and even flexible. The leather was a lot lighter in color than what I wanted ( I expected a "tan" boot, not off-white), but they still go well with the ACU and I'm sure the red soil of Hawaii will give them some color. All in all, the best boot I've ever owned, highly recommended, and I will be buying a second pair soon.

Very lightweight. Using them in training daily. Very flexible but comfortably supportive, especially around the ankle. Toe box is wide, but overall the boot runs a bit small. I ordered a size and a half larger to accomodate a thick sock in the winter or if needed an insert for additional comfort. They wear well and easy. They feel like a slipper. Very natural, the closest thing to bare feet you can get in a boot. Exactly what I needed to prevent and avoid shin splints from the heavier boots ordinarily issued by the military.

The minimalist concept; in my opinion, was some marketing strategy to evoke our wallets and sell us modern junk. Well, these boots prove me wrong. Pros a-extremely lightweight b-enough room (I usually wear 10.5 W combat boots, these are 11) c- what is break in time? d- all around breathable e- thick/strong laces f- you can actually fell the 5mm drop g- sole / ground grip; can feel the ground but won't punch through the thin sole - I can imagine energy is disperse like when bullet hits a Kevlar chest armor (if you have seen that test on laboratories you will understand) Cons not enough excuse to wear'em all that long-shift ends

I recently purchased these and followed the advice to go up half a size, which was good advice. They fit well even with 2 pairs of socks. The break in period was not as long as most other boots I have worn in 15 years of Military service. I currently walk 3-5 miles a day in them (to and from work, chow, etc) and have no issues. The ankle support and achilles support rubbed a bit at first but after a few days seem to be breaking in nicely. It is definately more strenuous on the calves to walk long distances in these so warm up and stretching is important! I would recommend these to anyone else who does not need a safety toe boot.

No sign of wear on the soles at all. They were great on the rocks near the water crossings, and smooth and light feeling on the dirt/pine needle sections. Pretty awesome. Can I add a picture? (Quite frankly, just about anything would be better than the heavy steel toe boots I was issued.) They run small, so definitely order at least 1/2 size big. I've been running a pair of Altra zero-drop shoes (literally), and the fit and feel are comparable. The ankle support in these are unbelievable, only issue is the heel cups sit a bit high and are stiff. Hopefully that will work out as they get broken in real nice. Definitely recommend using an alternate lacing pattern so your foot doesn't get choked out.

      8/30/2013

Been 35 years since airborne school, but I still try to run from place to place during the course of my daily work as hydro plant operator, carpenter, and property manager. I absolutely love my mini-mil boots. Been running the new way for a few years now ( pitter pattering around really: more of a trot than a run)....and I'm wondering if my feet are getting bigger from the change to minimalist running. Or the shoes are being built smaller....at any rate, both my Merrell trail gloves and these Mini Mils needed to be size 14 to fit properly, even though I've never had anything over a size 13 since the 10th grade (1973), and often if boots came in 12.5 ( asolo), they would fit...So they run small maybe. But this company took the 13's back with no problems, even though it took me a day to realize they were a bit tight. Much appreciated! That's service that will bring me back, though I will be more careful about how a boot feels initially, in the future. Yes, I am loving this boot: It trots great, keeps the debris out when in the shop or doing the yard landscape duty, and it looks cool with my various kilts. I run trails here in the Cascades with them (well; trotted trails) and they are plenty light but still protect my feet while giving me that accurate ground sensing that is fundamental to all this barefoot/minimalist/wild-man running thing. So lead me, follow me, or get the hell out of the way, but whatever you do, Drive on, Ranger! and there's nothing wrong with taking care of your body while you do it, so you can do it for a long time, by transitioning to a better trotting technique, in such an awesome boot as these Tactical Research Mini Mils.

These are nice, comfortable boots with excellent ankle support and grounded, responsive feel. Anything more is like wearing high heels. Just be aware, that you may have to go a size larger than military issue and even other Belleville boots. I had to go up only 1/2 size because the front of my foot is highly curved, meaning the big toe sticks out the farthest so the boot fits it perfectly. You'll need 1 size larger if you have a more balanced symmentric foot. They also feel noticeably warmer than my military issued boots.

These boots are well made and the sizing is good with ample width in the toe box. My only gripe is the heel slips. Hopefully breaking in will correct that. I do like the boots and I will purchase again.

So far boot seems to be great. Still trying to get use to the hotspot created in the heel cup. The light weight feel is a plus.

They are just as advertised. All my shoes from running to SRT are now minimus. Remember to slowly break in to these. It took about 6 months of running to break my body in to the minimus running shoes and these are just like the running shoes. They also fit tight.

These boots are awesome!!! Fits perfectly and are very light!!!!! Perfect for my wide feet which are 5w and I also ordered them 5w. Cant wait to take them on a ruck march. I didn't find any difficulty adjusting to them and I don't own vibrams. One minor negative is the ankle support rubbing against my heels but not too bad.

I ordered these boots on wednesday and they were on my door step on friday with free shipping. Sadly and i wont blame the boot they do not fit i ordered my regular Belleville size 11W and my big toes are tight up in the toe cap. Besides that they are feather light, seam to be very well built and truly everything minimal as they state. I am ordering a new pair now so i can send my other ones back and not have to wait. I am very excited about getting ones that fit and will review again once i have worn them for a few weeks.

Don't see any for women... I'd like to see a women's line of these boots... besides being comfortable and sleek, I suspect they would hold up very well... bring'em on!!!

these boots are great it takes a min to break them in especially if you have never worn any type of minimus boots or shoes before but ive worn them to several field problems and ranges and done several 12 to 15 mile rucks in them and i love them and their great for running around in and so far so good they clean up easy after heavy use in the field and the soles are still intact and good to go but the only downfall is they arent the bet for cold weather but thats the only complaint i have
