  • 4 out of 5 This is my 3rd pair of Sundowners, but the first pair I have purchased since they have started manufacturing in China. The first pair were purchased in 1994 and went to some lucky person at a Salvation Army thrift store a few years ago. The last pair I bought were made in Italy in 1998. They are still in great shape considering their age, and my son now wears them. I was a bit concerned due to all the negativity thrown around (about the China thing)... but I am pleased to say that I have found it to be a lot of hype without merit. I had a feeling that might be the case, as many people will start hurling stones as soon as they see others in the crowd doing the same. I have already hiked over 25 miles in this new pair, and they are doing well. Personally, I have always like the fact that Sundowners are nice and stiff... this makes it take a long while to break them in, but I feel that is part of what makes them last so long. While there are some rather uncomfortable spots during this long break-in period, this pair seems to feel the same as the other (made in Italy) pairs I have owned in the past. The real issue is not where they are made, but how they are made. So far, I haven't found anything to complain about. On the contrary, I am happy with my purchase and glad to see that Vasque is still making these puppies. As far as hikingboots.com goes, I was also very pleased. The boots arrived way ahead of schedule, and everything in the process was quick and painless. I was also happy with the price... I paid $167 including shipping, which is almost $35 less than the last couple pairs I bought.

  • 5 out of 5 I was delighted with my purchase. I didn't have a Christmas gift for my adult son and his wife mentioned that he had said his hiking books that we bought for his Georgia State College Geological Mapping trip, 20 years ago, were the best boots he had ever had. He was still wearing them. I went on line and found them and ordered them. They arrived the week after Christmas and he is so happy with them. Just like the originals 20 years ago! It made my Christmas.

  • 5 out of 5 I bought a pair of Vasque Sundowners 13 years ago -- the first year they were made in China. Previously, they'd been made in Italy. I thought for sure I was getting a bum product that wouldn't last through my honeymoon. But they stood up to the Sangre de Cristos, the Rockies, the Adirondacks, the Shawgunks, Mt. Katahdin, the Blue Mountains, Algonquin Park. 13 winters of daily wear as a warm, comfortable winter boot stand in and weekends in snowshoes. Today, the leather still shines up nice with beeswax, sole still has some tread left and they're still perfectly waterproof, but 13 years of extremes and kicking rocks on the trail have caused the sole to split in the front near the toes. A bit of shoe goo could fix them right up, but you know what? Vasque deserves more of my money, so I'll be replacing them with another pair of Chinese made Vasque Sundowners.

  • 1 out of 5 I returned these right away. Didn't even try on, I could tell they were not the same boot I had before. My first pair of Sundowners were purchased in 1997 and just recently threw them out. Trust me an everybody on here when they say, you can tell a BIG difference in the old (Italy) style and the new (China) style. Very dissappointed in Vasque for this. But I get it, it's all about the bottom line. Time to try Asolo.
We're so sorry to hear the boots didn't work out for you! If you want any recommendations for similar styles, feel free to reach out to our customer relations team. They will be happy to make some suggestions. - TacticalGear.com

  • 5 out of 5 I boot my first and only pair of Vasque Sundowners from REI in 1990. Have been all over the country, high and low. This pair of boots have been resoled once and reconditioned leather once. Awesome boot. Italian made. I pray I never have to try to replace them, as they are now made in China and I have heard, do not hold up. If you can find a pair of "old" Vasque Sundowners, then you might do better than to buy new ones. It is so sad that we can't keep quality over the years, but the Italian made Vasque Sundowner is awesome!

  • 3 out of 5 I began wearing this model when it was first introduced. It had always been sturdy, comfortable and dependable. Last summer I purchased my 16th pair. They lasted about 10 days. The speed lace eyelets pulled out. So this pair I just purchased (2 weeks ago) are being evaluated. Boots are comfortable as ever, but can I depend on them in the deep woods?

  • 1 out of 5 I bought this boot in the late 80's made in Italy. I still have the original boot in fact I bought another a few years later(made in Italy) and still wear those. Through the years I have worn out several soles a good estimate 3 soles each pair, they were so comfortable I preferred them over sneakers. I had bought the Sundowner GTX about 7 years ago unfortunately the do not compare at all, they are made in china. They don't fit correctly, the leather is too stiff, they won't conform to your foot and the leather cracks. I still wear the old sundowners.

  • 1 out of 5 About 22 years ago I bought a pair of Vasque boots. One piece leather uppers and Gore-tex. I dont what you call them, I guess "Sundowners"? It was a medium-hiking boot. Very nice. Wore them for about 15 years. Only one sole change. The leather aged into a beautiful patina, like old saddle leather or a high quality first-base mitt from the 1920s, sort of burgundy. I hiked all over the Angeleus Crest, the San Gabes, the eastern and western Sierras, the SoCal , Arizona and Utah deserts with those. I even took them on the San Fransisco Rip Rap breakwaters looking for salvage. Best boots I ever had. I used to get compliments on those boots. From hippies. From climbers. From hikers. From bikers. From relatives. One young lady in a bikini in Playa Del Rey told me they were, "sexy". Then one day...they wore out, and my foot was also about a half-size bigger. I wanted to buy the same kind but was disappointed they were discontinued. I mean, they had sundowner GTX, but the profile was different. I bought some anyway. My boots were made in Italy. These new ones were from China. I got them and the leather was different, somewhat cheaper, not prepared correctly. The feel was different too. I called the guy I mail-ordered them from and told him. It was in Minnesota some place, a Red Wing distributor. He sounded all forlorn and said they were getting several returns from buyers because the Sundowners were no longer made in Italy, and the had a "different" feel. I felt sorry for the guy so I said, "I'll keep them...I'll give them a try". Which I did, for about 5 years. The leather was indeed different. It was cheap and it did not age into a nice patina. They became scratched , the leather rubbed off and became super dull, they looked like split leather within a month. The old boots took about 2 days to conform to the exact shape of my foot, the new ones, after 5 years, never did. Within 5 months, the soles started peeling. About a year ago, the sole on the right started flapping, which I fixed with Shoe-Goo. Then yesterday, I went into the Mojave with a prospector friend, and BOTH soles started flapping. Very embarrassing. The prospector, a Yosemite Sam-type, started cackling like Walter Houston in "Treasure Sierra Madre". 5 year old boots! Its a good thing I had some hockey tape in my back pack. Thank God for hockey tape. But you can be sure...I will never ever buy Vasque boots again. Dont get me wrong, I'm no nativist or super-American-China-hater dude. I know you guys have economic problems and are just trying to make a living and keep hundreds of folks employed. But I would have paid up to a hundred bucks more just to get the original quality Italian goods.

  • 5 out of 5 ANY boot that can hold up for more than 10 years earns its place as an elite boot. I've had the same pair since 1994. Still comfortable during long periods on foot, 8+ hours. The sole still has great tread and no cracks. The only thing that has suffered is the leather upper which has endured dog fights (play), rock slides, oil, rain, mud, alcohol, syrup, spit, and much more. My boots have weathered the decks of Navy ships and the deserts of the middle east to the lava plains of Iceland. This boot is a classic that I hope will be around by the time I'm ready to get another pair. The only thing I miss is the contrasting stitches that the Italian Sundowners had. Please bring that back! Then they would be ultra stylish too! I'm serious, bring back the off white stitching. It looks WAY better and adds a subtle richness to an already outstanding and special boot. Dare I say an Icon?

  • 5 out of 5 These are fantastic boots. I wore mine to do a couple of 14ers in CO recently. They performed extremely well. Durability, comfort, and the classic styling that I love. This is a boot that I will continue to buy as long as Vasque makes them.

  • 5 out of 5 I've owned a pair of Vasque since 1993. My only concern was when the company started making the boot in China. If you keep the leather conditioned you may own the same pair for 10 years like I did on my first pair. I am now on my third pair of Sundowners. Pleas Vasque, never change this style. The style is classic and forever Vasque. Thanks for the quality. I guess every company has to cut costs. Chinese or not, the boot still rocks.
