How To Measure Your Inseam

Your inseam is the measurement (typically in inches) that runs from the crotch of your pants all the way down to the hem of your pant leg. It’s important to know this number because it’s commonly used to determine pant length, which helps ensure a perfect fit. While it may be commonly used, knowing how to properly execute the measurement isn’t as common. That’s why we took the time to create this useful step-by-step guide. All you need to get started is a sturdy flat surface, a measuring tool and a pair of your favorite pants.

Step 1

Grab a pair of well-fitting pants that you already own. If possible, use a pair of pants that are a similar style to the ones you’re interested in purchasing. Be sure to check the tag, it’s possible that the length of your inseam is already printed there.

Step 2

Lay the pants down on a flat surface and fold them in half lengthwise. Make sure the legs are lined up equally and that any folds are smoothed out.

Step 3

Lift the top pant leg and pull it back over the waistband. This will reveal the inseam.

Step 4

Locate the spot where the crotch seam meets the seam that goes down the pant leg. This is where you will want to start your measurement.

Step 5

Measure all the way down to the hem of the pant leg, which is located at the very bottom. This is your inseam measurement.

Once you determine your measurement, be sure to write it down so you don’t forget it. If for some reason you’re not entirely convinced that this number is correct, try measuring a few different pairs of pants to ensure an accurate reading. Now that you know how to measure your inseam, purchasing pants that fit perfectly should be easier than ever.
