Salomon Quest 4D GTX Forces

Lightweight but built to carry heavy loads, the Quest 4D GTX Forces can take on hostile mountain environments with ease. Modeled after Salomon backpacking footwear, these boots provide great support, traction and weather protection in a stealth package. When operators move, train and deploy in varied terrain, having a platform that gives stability and cushioning is critical. 4D Chassis technology provides foot control and protection with active comfort, torsional stiffness, lateral stability, and wider outsoles to increase ankle support to provide a more stable platform for walking. Contagrip outsoles yield the supported grip of a mountain boot with the flexibility to take a knee or sprint to the target in any conditions.

    • Awesome Duty Shoes
      Reviewer: Darin DeGnath

      7/8/2017

I bought a pair of Salomon hiker Shoes that are very similar to these just to see if I wanted to spend my hard earned money on the 4D series of shoes. I only use the 4D's for duty shoes so they are still in the process of breaking in. I can say that I love the speed lacing system on these over my hiking version which has the metal hook type lacing system. I am constantly trying to even out my laces on my hikers where as these laces are not problematic in that area. I haven't had to use them in an defensive posture, but they fill like they will hold up. The 4D's are just like my hiker versions in that my feet stay relatively cool throughout the shift. Laces have extra length so if you need it you have enough to use. Ankle support is just right in that it is not to stiff as to rub your ankle raw, but still keep your ankles integrity while moving. Longevity of trade is yet to be seen. My last boots lasted about 2.5 years. I'm hoping the 4D's will out perform my last boots in tread life. I love the reinforced toe section. I work in a place where there are multiple places that are hazardous to toe injuries. The toe section takes away the stress of thinking about smashing my toes into concrete, corner of a wall or closed in a heavy door. Like I said, still breaking them in. I guess we will see how good they are once they are all the way broken in. If they are anything like my Salomon hikers, they are just getting better with time. Just keep the 10.5's in stock and I will keep buying them. Awesome shoe and that is coming from someone with a Light Infantry background. I wished I would have had these when I served.

Wow, these Salomon's are amazing. I couldn't be happier. Very good quality, fantastic ankle support and super comfortable. I think they run a bit small, I usually wear 10.5's, but I had to return mine for an 11, the 11's fit perfectly and their customer service is so helpful. Returns, if needed, are indeed easy.

I'm a Tenderfoot, and thru heredity my heels crack deeply and often. I took-up hunting in 2014 and bought a pair of these from a local retailer. They're still going strong. If these boots can allow this near 50 yr old with a desk-job who works from home (who used to weight-train, but hasn't been in the gym in forever) to be able to do 13 mile hikes with matching 2250 ft ascent+descents... then these boots can easily carry you on your adventures. They climb SoCal mountains like a billy goat. Just be a little more cautious when traversing the tops of rocks crossing creeks which may be wet or possibly have a sheen of ice on them, or when a descending trail is hard-pack shale with that slightly sandy peppering on them. Also be sure to shoot'em up with spray-can water-proofing treatment every so often. Definitely get a Peet's Boot Dryer to go along with them too!

Now that I have the lacing down, I can get them on relatively quick and cinched down how I like. I like how the middle eyelet locks in the lace so the bottom stays tight when I'm trying to get the upper laced tight. This is a very comfortable boot; I just spent 6 hours on my feet standing up while working off duty at a HS football game and my dogs didn't bark once, lol. Going to get a regular pair for hunting.

Other than that I love them able to run in them, which is a must. They fit policy for department dress code.

      Reviewer: Michael Molan

      2/29/2016

This boot is what I expected. It is light weight and comfortable. I have a pair of the original Quest 4's and loved them. I have a wider toe box (not foot) and these fit comfortably. The fit is true to size and took very little time to break them in. The only thing I would change is the lacing. The original Quest 4's have hooks at the top. These boots have eyelets and can be difficult to get snug. Other than that, I would buy these again.

    • Great, stable, comfortable boot!
      Reviewer: Warren Martin

      11/18/2015

I own a pair of "non-Forces" Quest boots, which have been great overall. However, I have a bone spur on my right heel, and I've had to put a circular corn bandage covered with duct tape over it when wearing the original Quests, as well as with all other hiking boots I've tried. The Quest 4D GTX Forces model are the first boots to allow me to go without any kind of protection for my bone spur! The hikes have been totally pain- and blister-free!! These boots are also very comfortable and effective over any kind of terrain without any break-in period. Stability and traction are excellent. Some other Salomons I've worn have had leaks around the Gore-tex, but these seem to be waterproof so far. This is important to me, as I walk through and stand in streams to do waterfall photography. The only possibly negative comments I might make are (1.) The suede leather on the uppers really soaks up water, so a good silicone treatment (or two or three) will help the boots to dry faster and possibly help to preserve the leather better. (2.) The way this model is cut might require a half size larger for some people, as it did for me: My shoe size is 10.5 and my boot size is 11. I tried the 11 in the "Forces" but had to return it and get an 11.5, as my toes were uncomfortably touching the front of the boots by the end of the day.

These are much better than any boots the corp ever issued. Lightweight, super ankle support for humping heavy rigs in challenging terrain. These boots are designed to breath without compromising the Gortex inner. Very short break in time! Wear them for a few days and you're good to go. Nice Job Salomon!

    • Difficult lacing system
      Reviewer: Brandon

      11/7/2015

These boots are my second pair. I bought them for work as the original ones are not black. These boots are the most comfortable boots I have ever owned and if there is one thing I have learned, it's that you pay to take care of your feet. The first set I have had for about a year. Again, comfortable right out of the box and got even better as they broke in. I wear these boots every day the tread has lasted fair well. It has gone down on the heal do to how my foot lands, however it is still in good shape. The forces boots, I have only had a few weeks. I expect great things out of them as well. I was sad end however to see that the lacing system is closed. The original boots have closed lacing over the lower part of the boot/foot and a wrap and hook for the top ankle support of the boot. I loved this for its speed and with the Salomon lacing lug system that kept the laces tight. The forces boots however. Are closed eyelets all the way up the boot. It still has the lug system that secures the laces to ensure they stay tight, but with the lose eyelets above the locking lug, it makes it very difficult to tie and tighten the boots. Now, instead of getting my boots on in a quick fashion, I have to mess with the laces to make sure I get them the tightness I like them. I am still messing with the best way to get a consistent tie out of this lacing sytem. I would give these boots a fivery for my past experience if it weren't for the closed eyelet lacing on the Quest forces boot. A 3 wasn't fair for just the lacing difficulty, no matter how frustrating it can be to tie these boots.

      Reviewer: Kino

      11/5/2015

I don't know what it is about these boots. They make the balls of my feet cramp so bad. It starts when I am sitting or driving and then when I stand up the pain is piercing between my toes, it's enough to make my eye squint! Worst thing is this now happens to me when I am wearing other boots now. It's like they did something to my feet. I am wearing 2 sizes up and they don't come in a wide.. only narrow and medium. Thats likely the cause. Too bad because they are really well made. Just really uncomfortable to wear.

    • You NEED to Scotch-Guard it!
      Reviewer: TheGDog

      4/21/2015

I'm a n00b to hunting. Started October 2014 at the age of 45. I've been very impressed with these boots in all areas but one. The only ding against these boots is that you MUST give them a Scotch-Guard water-proofing treatment. I'm posting this for anyone else who gets these boots and plans to go into the mountains/field with them. When they get wet.. the wet slowly creeps thru and penetrates the leather and eventually makes it's way into the boot. (That same leather takes quite a bit of time to dry too, even with a hair dryer pointing into the boot) That issue seems to be doing Ok now that I performed a Scotch-Guard treatment on the outside of them. And truthfully isn't often an issue in SoCal. I've been brutal on these boots. I've done 14hr days of continuous trekking with large elevation change, and my tender desk-job feet seldom suffer any blistering at all in these boots. Usually only when there is a ton of steep descent. The sole pattern kicks butt for climbing up soft stuff. Ya feel like a billy goat. Not as good for descending on hard pack. Not the best on wet rocks. It's a lil hard to snap the laces into the top three eyelets when lacing up. Ya gotta be sure to snug the heck out of the tie in the laces. In the beginning get in the habit of checking the laces when you stop for a rest. With the exception of the waterproofing... so far so good!

This has been the coldest winter in years, -20 at night with the wind chill factor, and the only part of me that wasn't cold was my feet! The quality is definitely there. The all black Quest is comfortable, warm w/o overheating, able to handle snow & ice and look subtle while doing it. The fit is superb with a nice heel cup and wide toebox and easily paired with Wigwam or Smartwool socks. The hold the ankle w/o feeling claustrophobic. Exceptional boot.

These boots are just like the civilian version except the lacing system is a bit different on these and I like it better. If you wear and like the civilian version you are going to be right at home in these. I've been wearing on duty and nobody has noticed yet. Very comfortable and very little break in time needed. The non GTX may be better if you really need all black. The asphalt color part of these boots is a bit lighter black in color but still work for me.
